What happened

Shelling and sharpshooting went on along the northern and western lines. Among the civilian dead was Solomon Luckie, a free Black barber, hit by a fragment of a shell that struck the iron lamppost at Whitehall and Alabama Sts; he died despite medical care. The lamppost stands in Underground Atlanta; its 1919 plaque dates the hit to July 22, and the exact day is uncertain.
