The record

In August 1863 Grant proposed a full perimeter of works around the city. He designed 19 artillery forts, each for four to six guns, linked by rifle pits: about 10.5 miles in all, averaging 1.25 miles from the center. Hundreds of enslaved men, hired from their owners at $1 a day or $25 a month, built it through the fall of 1863; fields were dug up and houses torn down, even on Grant's own land. He later gave the city the land for Grant Park (1882 or 1883 per the markers). The house (1856) is at 327 St. Paul Ave SE.
