The record

Late on Aug 25 the XX Corps fell back to the river crossings. Williams covered the railroad bridge at Bolton, Ward covered Turner's Ferry, and Geary covered Pace's Ferry with his three brigades side by side. Confederate cavalry, thinking the Federals were retreating across the river, attacked Ireland's New York and Pennsylvania troops here repeatedly and then withdrew. From these crossings the XX Corps sent the reconnaissance that received Atlanta's surrender on Sept 2. The marker is on private school grounds and is reported not in place.
