Swanton House (c. 1825)

A log house of the 1820s, later enlarged, that belonged to DeKalb pioneer Ammi Williams and, from 1852, to Benjamin F. Swanton. It is one of Decatur's oldest buildings.

The record

Wikipedia says Burwell Johnson built the original two-room log section around 1825; the DeKalb History Center dates the house to about 1825 in one place and to 1823-1830 in another, and the 1956 GHS marker says only 'prior to 1842.' Swanton bought the house in 1852, and in July 1864 Brig. Gen. Thomas Sweeny made his headquarters here. It stood at 240 Atlanta Avenue until it was moved to Adair Park around 1970, reopening in 1972, and was listed on the National Register in 1978.

Today: DeKalb History Center's Adair Park complex, 720 W. Trinity Pl, Decatur.
