Both sides of the works at Leggett's Hill
What happened
Hit in front by Maney and in the rear by Cleburne, Giles Smith's men fought from both sides of their breastworks. 'The flags of two opposing regiments would meet on the opposite sides of the same works,' Smith reported. They fell back to the south slope of Leggett's Hill and formed a new line east from it beside Leggett's division. Stevenson's division came out from the city works to join the attacks, but repeated assaults failed to take the hill before dark.
