The record

When the XV Corps moved west on July 22 from its line at Candler St to the abandoned Confederate works at the Troup Hurt house, Lt. Samuel Edge set up a signal station in a tall pine with a view of fortified Atlanta. He reported the Confederates advancing astride the railroad, left when the XV Corps line broke, and returned after it was restored. In 1885 the painters of the Cyclorama studied the battlefield from a tower near this spot, which fixed the painting's viewpoint.
