See it on the map All Civil War records

What happened

McPherson's army pushed west from Decatur along the Georgia Railroad and the Decatur road. Wheeler's dismounted cavalry held the bald hill south of the railroad, and Brig. Gen. Walter Q. Gresham, commanding the XVII Corps' 4th Division, was shot in the knee in the advance; Giles A. Smith took the division. Cheatham's (Hood's old) corps held the outer line from Cheatham's salient south to the railroad against the IV and XXIII Corps.
