Sherman leaves Atlanta

What happened

Sherman rode out by the Decatur road with the XIV Corps and paused on the July 22 battlefield near where McPherson fell to look back at the burning city. He marched 'by Lithonia, Covington, and Shady Dale, directly on Milledgeville,' and camped that night near Lithonia.
